The eighth annual 4-mile Ruth Allen Memorial Run and Fun Walk and Youth Run will be held Saturday, August 12, 2017 in Deansboro, NY.
Registration for the run and walk and the youth run will begin at 7:00 at the Depot off Route 315 in Deansboro. The run and walk will start at 8:00 a.m, by the Depot, and will go for four miles. The runners will resume the course taken prior to the bridge construction in 2016: south down the trail until Burnham Road; left on Burnham until Route 315; and down Route 315 until the trail and the finish line.
The walkers will walk south down the trail just as they have always. The Youth Run, which begins at 9:15, will cover one mile on the trail (one-half mile each way), starting at the Depot. The Youth Run is available for ages 12 and under, and each finisher will receive a prize. T shirts will be offered to the first 70 registered run/walk and youth run/walk participants, and there will be a raffle featuring prizes to runners and walkers alike, as well as prizes presented to the overall male and female run finisher, and to the top runners in each category: 13-18; 19-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-50; 60-69; 70-79; 80+. Walkers will receive prizes for the oldest and youngest walker, and to the walker who traveled the farthest to participate. Everyone receives a finisher’s award.
There will be plenty of water during the race, and fruit, sport drink and water available after the event.
The proceeds of the Run and Fun Walk are targeted for a scholarship in Ruth Allen's name, named the Ruth Allen Citizenship Award, presented to a deserving graduating high school senior who has been involved in volunteer work, and who will carry on Ruth's values and commitment to community. Last year's scholarship recipient was Monica Blunt.
The Run and Walk is named in memory of Ruth Allen, a long-time resident of Deansboro who, for many years, spearheaded the run / walk, which began in 1995 in conjunction with the Marshall Days in Deansboro. Discontinued a few years ago, that event was under the auspices of the Marshall Historical Society. For the past six years, however, the Run and Walk has been held thanks to the generosity of the Town of Marshall Brothertown Association, Inc.
The organizers of the Ruth Allen Memorial Run and Fun Walk hope to emphasize the beauty and uniqueness of the area around Deansboro by having the run and walk mostly on the Marshall Towpath, which is the former bed of the old O&W railroad, discontinued in Much of the flora 1957. Flora and fauna along the trail are identified, and the trees provide welcome shade. The Oriskany Creek, which, the most part, runs parallel to the trail, will travel with you.
In addition, the event is a good opportunity for families to participate together while stressing the importance of physical fitness. The run and walk is also part of the 2017 Route 20 Road Challenge Series of run/walk events, highlighting what communities on or near Route 20 have to offer.
